Steelers Hold Strength-Conditioning Clinic
The Pittsburgh Steelers recently held a strength and conditioning camp for area high school and youth coaches attended by several hundred and lasted nearly five hours at Heinz Field.
Steelers strength and conditioning coach Garrett Giemont and conditioning assistant Marcel Pastoor spoke with the coaches concerning proper stretching and conditioning and gave demonstrations with various techniques using machines and other styles.
Giemont basically provided an overview of the Steelers conditioning program — during the season as well as the offseason — from the basic philosophy of strength and conditioning to what a normal in-season week is like along with focusing on the importance of planning a program based on various age groups.
Pastoor focused on safety in the weight room, which ranges from the use of equipment to how the weight room is set up and flows. Since scholastic “strength” coaches aren’t always trained professionals, the clinic provides proper building blocks for athletic training for all levels.
Other speakers included Mike Marchinsky, the Steelers manager of youth football and marketing and Debra Kehoe on “The Allegience Against Drugs.” Leslie Bonci, the Steelers dietician, spoke for about a half hour on proper hydration, diet and nutrition. Bonci also is UPMC’s director of sports medicine and nutrition.
The clinic ended with product demonstrations and a trade show.
